Meet Our Team Series | Sharlet Scammell

alfie and ruby

Hello, I’m Sharlet (yep, just like “Charlotte” but spelt stupidly) & I am Head of Customer Relations here at Alcmena!!
I am 24 years old, a bit of a workaholic, a wife and a Mum to 2 and a half kids! Currently, outside of working for Alcmena, I run my small vegan snack business, Shnacks by Sharlet, from home as well as work as a Skills Lab Assistant for UNSW School of Medicine! I am also studying nursing (very, very slowly lol), but honestly the Alcmena-verse is where most of my time is spent!

I first started working with Alcmena approximately 18 months ago when I was luckily chosen to be a Brand Rep! From this position I found myself eager to be more and more involved in the Alcmena world and started helping out with Facebook messages, Instagram, the VIP group etc whenever I had the opportunity to! Then, at the beginning of 2020, Eunica offered me a position as Head of Customer Relations, which of course I jumped at, meaning I then took on the emails and all the other fun back-end stuff I do now! It has been such a fun ride and now what was meant to be a 5-10 hour a week job, keeps me plenty busy for 25-36 hours a week and I could not be more thankful if I tried! I truly love working at Alcmena and feel like I can really thrive here. I am incredibly lucky & count my blessings everyday that I get to play a small part in keeping the Alcmena cogs turning!

From a personal point of view, my 2 kidlets are 4 year old Alfie & almost 2 year old Ruby who are both absolutely off their chops and keep me beautifully insane at all times. We (myself and my husband Seb) are also looking forward to adding a 3rd to our madness in December! I live in Albury, NSW and have since the moment I was born (boring right?).

What prompted your decision to use cloth nappies?

I had never considered using cloth nappies because “that’s gross” (can we all do a collective eyeroll for past Sharlet), until I had a conversation with my sister who mentioned she would use them if she was to have another baby.

I couldn’t quite wrap my head around why anyone would want to be rinsing poo all day so did some research and after finding out the environmental impact of using disposable nappies, it was an absolute no-brainer for me to switch over to the dark side. We ordered a Trial Pack from Alcmena that day and haven’t looked back since!

What has surprised you the most on your cloth journey?

What hasn’t surprised me would probably be a better question haha!

  1. The community! I’ve met some truly incredible people in our team & community.
  2. The addiction, which is so real!
  3. The fact I am now lucky enough to work for Alcmena! I never quite imagined that cloth nappies would become such a huge part of my life and livelihood but here we are and I am loving every moment!!
  4. How bloody easy they actually are to use and incorporate into your life!!! This should be talked about more often!
  5. The drama! Boy, oh boy is there some drama in the cloth nappy world! Poo catching is a serious sport it seems!

Can you share some advice for families wanting to start using cloth?

Just do it!! All pros and no cons that can’t be fixed with a little adjustment!

Don’t get sucked in to the overwhelm of information out there surrounding cloth nappies! Find a couple of reputable sources (e.g. Clean Cloth Nappies ("CCN")) and a good community where you feel comfortable to ask questions and just order some nappies!! You will work it out!!

What is your favourite Alcmena print?

Well, I am probably a little bias in saying Shnack Time aren’t I?

I love Fawned of You for a simple, beautiful print and Turdis will always hold a special place in my heart because it’s how we found Alcmena and was the first cloth nappy we ever used!!

How do you fill your own cup?

By helping other people! I love making people feel happy & cared for. I struggle with the whole “self-care” dealio so I tend to get my kicks from making everyone else’s day a little better where I can! I am also a big birth buff so love looking at birth photography & vlogs in my free time! Learning about the natural physiological journey into motherhood makes my soul happy.

What would be the theme song of your life?

Easily the “Friends” theme song “I’ll be there for you,” because a) I just really bloody love Friends and b) I think it suits me!

If you could make a difference in the world, what would you be known for?

I would love to be known for just being a bloody good person and empowering other people to do whatever it is they want to do! I feel like we live in such a negative world at the moment with so many people wanting to do things but always having a “why not,” and usually it’s because of what other people will say or think which makes me sad. I’d love to be the person who inspired somebody to just go for it!

What is your most treasured possession?

I’m going to have to be “that typical millennial guy” and say my phone at this stage of my life. It allows me to connect with all the people I love, I can use it to work and support my family and it holds so many photos and memories I would be just devastated to lose. From a more sentimental point of view, my kid’s hand and feet sculptures from when they were newborns are also right up there on the list!

Who or what lights you up?

In a funny way, both spending time with my kids & working light me up! Each one acts as an escape from the other and I love having the opportunity to do both everyday! Working from home can be super tough but when the balance is right, it’s the best thing ever!

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

I can’t recall anything specific but any time anyone recognises my hard work, dedication or my service to them means the absolute world to me! Acts of Service is my love language and I love feeling appreciated and knowing the time I take to do something for someone else doesn’t go unnoticed.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I’m a mega over achiever. I am absolutely terrible at asking for help or accepting help even if I really need it! I also have really bad grip strength and as a result am THE WORST at anything along the lines of a rope swing haha.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

My Nan’s Lasagne. That shit is the sacred food of the angels, a true gift from God.

A genie gives you three wishes—what are they?

  1. An endless supply of chocolate & Moscato
  2. That everyone had equal access to resources, healthcare and education
  3. Smaller boobs haha (but seriously)

If life were a video game, what are some cheat codes?

To control Time! Let’s speed up the shitty days and slow down nap time haha! No I’d love to put more time in some of my days, it goes too fast!

What do you wish you knew more about?

Psychology! I would love to better understand why people think the way they do or why they make certain choices over others! I find it really interesting how different we all are!

Describe yourself in three words?

Driven, empathetic & a-huge-people-pleaser
