Meet An Alcmenie Series | Jade Neaylon

Jade Nealon and family posing happily on the beach

Hi! I’m Jade, I live in South Australia with my fiancée Danny, our son Angus, Fang the dog, two cats – Percy and Jethro, and a handful of fish.
My sister, Kate, and her dog, Stella, also live with us – we have a very full house! I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Teaching and planning my return to work in a café that Danny and I are setting up. Prior to Angus being born, I was a full-time barista in a coffee roastery/café in the Adelaide CBD. A few of my favourite things are a good coffee, animals, being busy, sewing, baking, and my little contact napper. I have a very strong dislike for coriander.

What prompted your decision to use cloth nappies?

My family have always been a bit eco orientated. Recycling plastics, reusing take-away containers and sorting green waste was the norm, so choosing cloth nappies seemed like a very natural choice. It was cemented by my ex-housemate, who had a one year old when we lived together, I was absolutely amazed by the number of nappies going in the bin each day.

What has surprised you the most on your cloth journey?

How easy it is to make the switch!

Can you share some advice for families wanting to start using cloth?

Using cloth doesn’t need to be “all or nothing”. At the end of the day, every cloth nappy used is one less disposable going in the bin. One cloth nappy used multiple times can make such a difference, so just do what is comfortable for you!

What is your favourite Alcmena print?

Ummm, just one print? Chamberpot, or Royal Flush, or Shnack Time. Oh, maybe Dinomite! I’m great at making decisions…

How do you fill your own cup?

I sew or bake wherever I can make time, or curling up on the couch for sleepy cuddles with Angus. I also love breakfast dates with my little family!

What is your most treasured possession?

A teddy that I was given on my first birthday from my Grommie and Grandpa. He passed away when I was younger so it’s a bit special to me. Also Angus’ ultrasound photos, which now live on our fridge.

Who or what lights you up?

Angus and Danny never fail to make me giggle. Danny is a little too fond of dad jokes and thinks he’s the funniest person ever, he always seems to know what to say to make me laugh. Angus knows what he wants and I love it, if I’m doing something and he wants a cuddle, he’ll take my hand and put it around him, which is just adorable.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

I overheard a little girl in Coles say to her mum, “look, Mum! She’s got Ariel hair” when I had bright red hair, it made my whole day. I always love hearing that people are proud of me, it’s not an often-heard compliment, but it means a lot to me.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

It’s often assumed that because I have brightly coloured hair that I’m super outgoing and extroverted but there is nothing I love more than being at home with a cup of tea.

A genie gives you three wishes—what are they?

I would wish that my children grow up to be kind and compassionate, to own our own home with enough land for me to adopt all the animals, and that no one would live in or experience poverty.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Tacos. So many options!

If life were a video game, what are some cheat codes?

/motherlode, if only that actually worked in real life, no one would live in poverty!

What do you wish you knew more about?

The science behind roasting coffee. Sewing, because there is so much to learn, especially about using different fabrics.

Describe yourself in three words?

Passionate, Stubborn, Loyal.
